Agar.io is the pioneer of the .io game genre. In this multiplayer game, you control a small agar cell, striving to become the largest cell in the arena. Your goal is to avoid larger cells while consuming smaller ones to grow in size.
This simple yet engaging game challenges you to grow your single-cell organism to outpace other players. Our family loves it because it requires strategy and teamwork. You must keep an eye on other players to figure out if you\'re larger or smaller than them. One tactic our youngest loves is hiding behind virus cells to stay safe. The best part is splitting your cell to help another player grow, a common sign of collaboration. We\'ve had several extended sessions where we teamed up with others to hunt in packs. It’s an excellent way to foster cooperation.

The game follows two simple principles:
Navigate the Agar.io battleground and survive as a single cell, all while striving to grow bigger. Think strategically—don\'t just run from the bigger cells, seize opportunities to consume as much as you can!
Collect the smaller blobs and consume other players to increase your mass. Stay away from larger blobs, as they will consume you, causing your game to end. But don’t worry, you can always start again and aim for a higher score!
Agar.io offers four different modes to enjoy:
Agar.io was launched by Matheus Valadares on April 28, 2015, on 4chan. A 19-year-old Brazilian developer, Matheus built the game in just a few days using JavaScript and C++. Initially, the game was nameless, and players had to connect directly to Valadares\' IP address to play.
The name \"Agar.io\" was suggested later by an anonymous user on 4chan. After the game gained traction, Matheus continued to improve it, and within a week, it was featured on Steam Greenlight.
Upon release, the game\'s reception was mixed. Some players praised its simplicity and engaging mechanics, likening it to a \"survival-of-the-fittest\" competition on a microscopic level. Others, however, criticized its repetitive gameplay and the controls on the mobile version. Gamezebo’s Tom Christiansen noted that the game failed to maintain his interest due to its repetitiveness.
Despite the initial mixed reviews, Agar.io quickly became a phenomenon. The game’s viral spread through social media and streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube played a key role in its success. The mobile version of the game was downloaded over 10 million times in its first week alone. In 2015, it became the most Googled video game of the year and ranked as the fifth top game on YouTube. A fun fact: Agar.io was even featured in the popular Netflix show *House of Cards*!
If you enjoy Agar.io, you should also try other .io games like Paper.io and Krunker!
